Bill began playing the accordion at age 12. He and his wife, Mary, put the Interlake Polka Kings band together in 1964 and they became legendary for his grass roots Ukrainian music. One of the best known polka bands in Western Canada were the Interlake Polka Kings, the core being a family band under the guidance of Bill and Mary Woloshyn. They performed across the Canadian prairies in various configurations for over 60 years.

This song tells the story of heartbreak and woe! 1500 albums of his first lp, 1971’s The Federal Grain Train, were being shipped to Manitoba from Vancouver but the train derailed at Lake Abamun, spilling all his albums. This song appeard on the second Russ Gurr album, On Tour.

This guy was the bartender at the Maple Leaf Hotel in Timmins who gave a travel weary, flat-broke Tom Connors his first real gig at the Maple Leaf in October, 1964. Lepine went on to write several songs with Connors, many of which appeared on Connors’s ‘Long Gone to the Yukon’ CD. He’s currently living in Thurso QC. This is the only record he ever released, on Tom’s Boot Records label, of course.

Mike McLuskey was a regular performer at small pubs in Toronto. I was introduced to him by the late CIUT host of ‘Acoustic Workshop’, Rick Fielding, who loved the way that McLuskey performed. He was a veteran performer then, but unfortunately only released one album and a 45. McLuskey passed away several years ago. This song was also produced for McLuskey’s album, Rich Man Hobo and it features Derek Granger on bass, brother-in-law to Newfound Records producer and host, Wayne Tucker. Not much can be found on line about this guy!

Incredibly, Lenny Breau played guitar on this track! He was living in Winnipeg, performing on his father’s Country Music Show in the latter 1950s when he was in his early teens. He was teaching Randy Bachman incredible chord structures for guitar. He also gave a guitar to Daisy DeBolt. "I Should Have Known Better" was one of several songs written and recorded specifically for the Beatles' debut movie, "A Hard Day's Night". The harmonica-driven arrangement by the group was similar to that heard on Frank Ifield's recording of "The Wayward Wind", a hit on the UK Singles Chart in March 1963. The Beatles were fans of Ifield and his music, and had covered his hit song "I Remember You" in their Hamburg days in 1962.

I didn’t know George Higton but I really like the album he put out in 2019, on vinyl no less! His wife posted this on Facebook just after his passing: George started off as a solo singer/songwriter mostly in the folk vane. He travelled around as a young man, with his guitar. After living for a period in NYC, writing for New York Rocker magazine, he returned to Toronto and started Shades Magazine. It was during this time that he and Barrie Farrell met and created the band Existers.
George found music to be an evolution, as his interests/focus changed so did his songwriting. Over the years after his Existers time, he worked as a solo performer and collaborated with many talented musical artists producing some amazing work – Ardin (Doug) Innis, Chip Yarwood, Ihor Holubizky, Nick "The Brownman" Ali, Rod Booth, Louis Simao, Rachel Melas, Cleave Anderson, Ernie Tollar, to name a few. He left some great songs to remember. Music, songwriting, writing and film were his passion. He worked on his craft right up to the end. His final music project will be finished, and released.
Thank you to those who remember George Higton, and who have felt his presence made a difference in their lives. He would have felt honoured.

The incredibly successful Toronto band from the ‘70s called Moxy had a major international run. By the latter part of the decade original members, Buddy Caine and Terry Jurik, would leave to form the short lived band Voodoo featured here. Read the Moxy history; it’s pretty amazing when you consider how many great players played in that band.

This is from The Who’s second studio album, A Quick One, which has always been one of my favourite Who albums. Instead of relying on Pete Townsend to write all the songs, each Who member was asked to contribute songs for the album. Pete wrote 4 of the songs (including mini-rock-opera A Quick One); Keith Moon wrote 2, as did John Entwistle, while Roger Daltry contributed one song.

In 1966, he joined The Mothers of Invention during the recording of the album Freak Out!, and later provided drums for several subsequent Mothers albums. He also featured in the movie Uncle Meat. He was enticed away from the Mothers by Jac Holzman at Elektra Records to form a supergroup, Rhinoceros. According to Frank Zappa, Holzman "offered Billy Mundi a huge amount of money, a place to live, the whole package — we'll make you a star, you'll work with these top-grade musicians instead of those comedy guys... But I don't blame Billy for taking the job, because at that time we were so poor he was living in the Albert Hotel and he couldn't get enough to eat — he used to come in and tell us how he'd quell his appetite by drinking the hot water in the shower..."

This is a 7 song EP album
The band existed between 1984-1999 who took their name from 'Revolution Rock' by The Clash. They had that Pogues-like Celtic rock feel expressed behind the fine vocals of band leader Mick Thomas. They covered Tex Mortons controversial 1930 song 'Sergeant Small' about the Queensland Railway Police, which had been banned soon after its original release in Australia. In the early 1990s they spent better part of a year in Canada, learning Stompin Tom and other Canadian songs for their live shows and did a great version of Sudbury Saturday Night.
This EP was released on Billy Bragg's Utility Records label, released by WEA. Their next record, Roaring Days, was their first major album release.
