Ron Scott played his first shows with Harold King, The Cobequid Mountain Boy from Springhill. In 1947 he got to tour with Hank Snow, playing both fiddle and mandolin. He then moved to Kingston, Ontario where he attended Queen's University and studied languages. While in Kingston he formed a group called "The Riders of The Southern Trails". During this time they went on the road with Wilma Lee and Stoney Cooper. After university Ron moved to Montreal.
Ron Scott’s most productive years in music were in Montreal. In 1955 he played with a band called the "Cinch Brothers" featuring Jean Carignan and and himself, backing up Bobby Hill. This was the first Canadian bluegrass band to have a regular radio show, which was called ‘The Hometown Jamboree’ heard over CFCF in Montreal. In May of 1957, Ron is claimed to have recorded the first bluegrass record in Canada on the Spartan label featuring "When the Bees are in the Hive" and "The White Rose". It’s really hard to say who had the first but Ron was certainly one of ‘em.

Aunt Martha's Home
Ellis Coles penned a humorous song about his Aunt Martha who lived in the house behind his in Carmanville, Newfoundland. Somehow lyrics got to country music veteran Dick Nolan who changed a few things and tidied the song up. Nolan’s recording of it spawned a mega-hit which transcended genres. That was in 1972 when CanCon regs first came into being, obviously helping create this hit song.
I befriended Ellis, visited him at his home a couple of times. There was a lyric that I wanted explained: “We crept up over Joe Tulk’s hill and stole Aunt Martha’s sheep.” I asked Ellis which hill? “Oh,” he said, “they come up with a grader and took away the hill.” I was expecting some big tall mountain when, in fact, the hill was just a bump in the road.

It was Frank Zappa who told me to check out an album he just released on his Straight Records label (along with Girls Together Outrageously, Alice Cooper and Captain Beefheart). I had no idea what I was in for. No music, just spoken word monologues from the 1950s that just flipped my wig a time or two. This particular piece is just fantastic, a perfect political folly for those who worship at the feet of the rich and famous.

Cover Portrait of Gwen by Mendelson Joe
I fell in love with Gwen’s singing in the 1980s after she joined Tamarack with James Gordon and Alex Sinclair as bass player / singer. She’s so original and expressive. I’ve never heard another voice like hers. And her songs! Equally impressive. She’s had her portrait painted by Mendelson Joe. Has been a member of the four female vocal band Quartette along with Sylvia Tyson, Cindy Church and Caitlan Hanford. And she’s a catlady with kids.
