In Toronto it was the Ugly Ducklings; in Montreal it was The Haunted. Both bands were in the Mick Jagger mode, expanding into psychedelic territory. Over the years, The Haunted went through at least 17 musicians, releasing 7 singles and two albums.

Guitarist Jurgen Peter: "In Canada, in the early '60s, there was no such thing as a commercial music industry. The DJ's played only American records and it was common knowledge that they lived off "payola" from the record companies. When we, The Haunted, started to play as a band in the Montreal area, there was no way to get a recording contract, no one to play your records, no booking agency to book us, no large shows and paying gigs to play at, no music magazine or anything like it to promote a local band.

"I had to scout out large halls and skating arenas and rent them from the local communities for a Friday night dance. I soon found out that if you hired the local DJ to be the master of ceremonies at your show, and gave him a percentage of the gate, he would plug that show all week long without having to buy airtime at a ridiculous price, and if you did have a record, he would actually play it on the air.

"I also realized that I needed a 'vehicle' that would promote The Haunted so I got together with one of our Montreal DJs, Dave Boxer from CFCF and formed a bi-weekly music paper ('Music Trend') and a booking agency (Groups And Sound Service aka GASS)."

Interestingly, my copy of this album has the wrong label on side one. It reads 'Difficult to Cure' by Rainbow with the serial PD 1-6316 - one number before League of Gentlemen, the label for side two. All the songs on the record though are by the League.

The back cover of the album features all their gigs from the album release tour of 1980. It says they played two gigs at the El Mocambo in Toronto June 17 and 18, 1981.

Another hard luck band who released two LPs for Columbia (and Epic) in the late 70s. They were dumped after their records didn’t sell very well, moved to England and breaking up by 1982. Formed by students from the Ontario College of Art, they played their first gig opening for Talking Heads in January 1977. Oddly, this album also features a cover of Wild in the Streets soundtrack song, “Shape of Things To Come” by Max Frost & The Troopers.

Ted Treibner

Positively Stompin' began as a duo consisting of Ted Treibner and Murray Heywood after their time in the rock band UIC. Possibly Stompin’ was actually the original name of Positively Stompin', a band that hit paydirt in the mid-1990s. But they joined Chuck Angus’s Save The Rails campaign as Possibly Stompin’ to drum up support in case it was Stompin’ Tom. A few weeks after we returned from the Rail trip, Ted and Murray appeared on my Great North Wind radio program where the three of us played Stompin’ Tom songs on the radio with a TTC streetcar (on vinyl) making it sound as if we were sitting at the back playing tunes.

The band's name is derived from the Hindi word pukka, which in UK slang can mean "very good". Rubber Girl was self-financed and produced. The band’s first album came out three years later, in 1984. The Toronto Police Service attempted to block radio airplay of their hit, "Cherry Beach Express",  due to its theme of opposition to police brutality.

Lithman came up through the British blues scene and moved to San Francisco in 1971. There he became associated with the avant-garde group The Residents. It is said he was given the name 'Snakefinger' by The Residents after looking at a photograph of Lithman in which his finger looks like a snake about to attack his violin. He performed and recorded with The Residents as Snakefinger and The Vestal Virgins. During a routine gig in Linz, Austria he suffered a heart attack and died at the age of 38.
