David Wiffen
b. 11 March 1942 Redhill, Surrey, England
Wiffen moved with his family to Canada at age 16, and became
part of the burgeoning folk music scene, initially in Toronto. In 1964, Wiffen
hitchhiked to Edmonton and later managed The Depression folk club in Calgary.
In 1965, having moved to Vancouver, Wiffen was invited to perform at The
Bunkhouse club on a live ensemble album. It became Wiffen's first solo album,
David Wiffen at the Bunkhouse Coffeehouse, Vancouver BC, on the Universal
International label, when the other invited musicians failed to show up.
Joined ‘The Children’, based in Ottawa. Members of The Children included
William Hawkins, Bruce Cockburn, Sneezy Waters and Richard Patterson. He
subsequently joined 3's a Crowd. Coast to Coast Fever, produced by Bruce
Cockburn, was supposed to put Wiffen On roughly the same vector as
Bruce and Murray McLauchlan, but it didn’t work out that way. After a few
years of drudgery, Wiffen quit performing and became a Limosine driver till
he hurt his back lifting a man in a wheel chair. After 26 years in the wilderness,
a third album, South of Somewhere, was released in 1999.

Another Ex-member of Fleetwood Mac, joined when he was only 17.
Had been previously been in a band called Boilerhouse who used to open gigs
for
Mac. He and Peter Green used to like jamming so it was only natural for Green
to invite Kirwin into his band. After various personnel changes
(Green gone; Spencer leaving; Christine McVie entering) and a few albums,
Kirwin started serious drinking and was eventually fired from the band by
Mick Fleetwood in 1973. None of Kirwan's solo releases was commercially successful.
Kirwan was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in
1998 for his work as part of Fleetwood Mac

recording music until well into his 50s back in 1971. He released three albums

drinking Saturday afternoons in a Pembroke Hotel but she was either too inebriated,
or not inebriated enough, to sing it all the way through. One day Barney
brought a walkman tape recorder in and captured the song just as the batteries
were slowing things down. He sang it on my Great North Wind radio program

Released 1973 & discontinued 1975
Like No. 2 hit Waterloo Sunset, Lavender Hill mythologises another part
of London - this time a busy thoroughfare near Clapham Junction. It’s only
found on the 1973 release The Great Lost Kinks Album of unreleased material
issued by Reprise Records in 1973 after The Kinks had moved to RCA. Ray Davies
and the Kinks management first learned of the album's existence after finding
it on the US Billboard record chart. Davies instituted legal action against
Reprise, which resulted in them discontinuing the album in 1975. Naturally
it became an immediate collector's item and most of the songs remained officially
unreleased until the 1998

b. Sudbury, ON Feb 11, 1937 / d. Toronto July 25, 2020 (83)
Originally known as The Bob Mark Six, this Toronto band was signed
to Arc Records and became The Secrets. They released "Crying Over Her" on
ARC Records which helped raise their profile and get them better live bookings.
While playing at the Toronto Pressmen's Club, CBC TV's Brian MacFarland (b.
August 10, 1931 New Liskeard, ON – was on Hockey Night in Canada from 1964
- 91) introduced himself to the band and wanted the band to record a song
he'd written for the Toronto Maple Leafs' winger Eddie Shack called
"Clear The Track (Here Comes Shack)". The band agreed under the assumption
that the recording was a gift for McFarland's hockey playing friend. However,
much to their surprise, and that of their label ARC Records, the song was
released nationally under the name Douglas Rankine With The Secrets on RCA's
Canadian International label. The band was embarrassed by the release and
tried to distance themselves from it despite reaching #1 on the CHUM Chart
in February 1966 and managing No.56 on the national charts by April of 1966
for total run of nine weeks radio play.
Now signed to Arc's Yorkville Records imprint, the Secrets wanted to distance
themselves from being pigeon-holed as a "novelty act" and soon changed their
name to The Quiet Jungle. Their first single, "Ship Of Dreams", was released
in early 1967, and reached #31 on the CHUM chart (and No.43 nationally) by
February. The record achieved the desired effect in leaving the previous
single a memory and gave the band a renewed spirit.
During the 1966 season Shack broke out, scoring a career high 26 goals on a line with Ron Ellis and Bob Pulford.

They were discovered while performing in student venues at New

who gave the group its name. The original lead singer was John “Jay” Taylor
and after he quit in 1962 was replaced by David Black who had to assume the
name Jay. They hit the charts in 1963 with "Only In America," a song originally
meant for The Drifters. "Come a Little Bit Closer" in 1964 hit #3, and "Cara
Mia" in 1965, which hit #4.
Come a Little Bit Closer was written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, as well

The band formed in Los Angeles in August 1966 from the folk rock group
"The Ashes", they were originally called The Young Swingers featuring future
Jefferson Airplane drummer Spencer Dryden. Dryden left The Ashes (May 1966)
to replace Skip Spence (who joined Moby Grape) in Jefferson Airplane. The
Ashes morphed into the Crossing Guards before finding the name Peanut Butter
Conspiracy. The group signed with Columbia Records in late 1966, releasing
a single and made records with producer Gary Usher who went on to produce
The Byrds. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, their records didn’t sell
very well and they split up in 1970.
Jimmy Buffett wrote and recorded a song on his 1975 album Havana Daydreaming called Peanut Butter Conspiracy.
