London UK
Barry Andrews, organ

Sara Lee, bass
Johnny Toobad, drums

Interestingly, my copy of this album has the wrong label on side one. It reads 'Difficult to Cure' by Rainbow with the serial PD 1-6316 - one number before League of Gentlemen, the label for side two. All the songs on the record though are by the League. The back cover of the album features all their gigs from the album release tour of 1980. It says they played two gigs at the El Mocambo in Toronto June 17 and 18, 1981.

David LaFlamme
b Gary Poise May 4, 1941, in New Britain, CT / d. Aug 6, 2023, Santa Rosa, CA (82)

Active years: 1967-1974

Classically trained violinist Gary Poise changed his name rock n’ roll stage name to David LaFlamme so as to protect his Symphony Orchestra reputation. Symphony Orchestras at that time often did not think much of Rock musicians. The theme from the song "Bombay Calling" was later used, at a slower tempo, by Deep Purple as the intro to "Child in Time" on its Deep Purple in Rock album.

This was their first album and many of us who have listened to it for years cherish it. It certainly beats their other albums which followed. Not a dull moment on it.

12. Horn: Pony Buns

Alan Duffy, bass
David deLaunay, keys
Wayne Jackson, trumpet
Billy Bryans, drums

Produced by Alan Duffy, Billy Bryans and Horn, 1972
Recorded and mixed by Brock Fricker at Thunder Sound Studios, Toronto

This track by this very experimental jazz oriented rock band is a typical example of new music created in the spirit of Frank Zappa. Very uncomercial and yet artistic; uncompromising, it’s not too difficult to see why they only got to make one album. One of those artistic successes that very few people buy.

13. If: Shadows and Echoes
(Grigson / Busby)
If2: Capitol Records EMI SW 676
London UK
John Mealing: keys
Terry Smith: guitars
Jim Richardson: bass
Dennis Elliot: drums
Dick Morrissey: reeds
JW Kodkinson: vocal, percussion
Dave Quincy: reeds

Produced by Lew Futterman, 1971
Recorded by John Child at The Hit Factory, NYC and by Frank Owen at Island Studios, London

These guys used to pack them in wherever they played but it never caught on with the record buying public. They released several albums between 1970 and 1975. Really groundbreaking at the time. Sophisticated rock music for those with discernable tastes is the way that I’d describe them, if asked, which I wasn’t, so…

(Plaid)
The Digging Remedy: Warp Records - LP277B
London UK

Benet Walsh: flute, guitar

Produced by Plaid 2016

I went to a little city in England called Ludlow a few years ago and was introduced (in a pub, of course) to Benet Walsh. He was excited to tell me that he just put out some vinyl with Plaid, got up and ran across the road to his flat and returned with a double LP copy of The Digging Remedy for me. The following January Plaid made it to Toronto. Nice connection to make, just on a whim. I mean, why Ludlow?

Back in 1966 when I was  teen, I loved feedback. Put a guitar by an amp and let it wail. But this record really blew my mind! I loved it, bought the 45 and enjoyed all 4 minutes and 44 seconds of it. The title of the song refers to Winnie the Pooh as well as folk singer Fred Neil: parts of the lyric are taken from A. A. Milne's first book of children's poetry When We Were Very Young.

During the band's tour to promote New Heroin, singer Neil Arbic became increasingly disillusioned with the music industry, and began to rebel against the promotional demands of leading a band seemingly on the verge of stardom. He shaved his head, had a diet of almonds and raisins, failed to show up for shows, eventually took a vow of silence and he strictly refused to speak offstage. Although the band completed recording of their 2nd album All the Children Are In, it was never released. Film producer Bruce McDonald's cult hit Roadkill used a fictionalized version of  ‘A Neon Rome’ as the "Children of Paradise", a band which disappeared on tour of Northern Ontario after its lead singer, a similar existential crisis as Neil Arbeck.

His first UK band was called The Mann-Hugg Blues Brothers and were soon signed to EMI. They were urged to change their name to Manfred Mann. They recorded massive hits throughout the rest of the 60s before evolving into the jazz-fusion Earth Band. They’ve continued to perform and made their last record in 2006.

Early owners of each copy of The Good Earth were entitled to rights over 1 square foot of the earth situated at Llanerchyrfa in the County of Brecon, in Wales.
