We played the entire B side of Ten Years After's 3rd LP, Stonedhenge. I've grown to really love this record which I purchased off of Geddy Lee for two bucks coz he didn't take to it. So all in all, I thought it was a good deal! It was the band at its best before the Woodstock movie made them more commercial.

The end of the 19th century saw a continuous exodus of Acadians who left behind peasant life in search of wealth and fortune, further south.  Beginning in 1975, the band was originally called Lougarou, but had to change its name after being sued by a dance troop named Les Loups-garous. The group became popular not only in Quebec but across Canada, with its rock sound and its lyrics taken from French and French Canadian traditional songs.  Ed Stasium is an American record producer and engineer who has worked on albums by the Ramones, Talking Heads, the Smithereens and Living Colour.

Paul Cormier aka Monsieur Pointu

There are many great fiddlers in Canada but the distinction Paul Cormier attained on top of his musical skills was ‘Entertainer’. He had the showmanship so often missing with musicians who can play, making his recordings accessible across Queberc and even into English Canada. He released a dozen albums and even took part in a film.

Henry Blake Fordham aka Kelly Jay
b. 1 Dec 1941 Toronto / d. Calgary AB June 21, 2019 (77)

Crowbar came together in 1970 after the band had been fired as Ronnie Hawkins’ backup band. Fordham was the band’s lead singing keyboard player and was the heart of the band. He co-wrote “Oh What a Feeling” which was inducted into the Canadian Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 2011. Margaret Trudeau (the Prime Minister’s mother), was a Crowbar fan and the band performed at many of Trudeau’s election campaign rallies in 1972. In my humble opinion, Kelly Jay was the first real ‘Captain Canada’; he also became good friends with John Lennon and Bruce Springsteen.

Buddy Miles was an excellent drummer but he didn’t do so well in the Hendrix Experience, having taken over the drum throne after Mitch Mitchell. Ironically, it was Mitchell who took over from Miles, before Hendrix died. Joined here with Michael Bloomfield. The album also features the fine harp playing of Richard Newell, King Biscuit Boy from Hamilton.

This band started off as The Mutineers formed in Durant, Oklahoma in 1962. After changing their act following the British Invasion, they released five singles, including this one but Western Union was their only real hits song. As for this song, I can remember hearing it in the sixties but it never really did much for the band. They broke up in 1969 as ‘One Hit Wonders’.

(W Carlos)
Clockwork Orange Soundtrack: Warner Brothers - 2573
Pawtucket RI
Wendy Carlos: Moog Synthesizer
Produced by Rachel Elkind, 1971

Walter Carlos aka Wendy Carlos
b. November 14, 1939 Pawtucket, Rhode Island

This is an excerpt of Timesteps as used by Stanley Kubrick in the film. Carlos went on to release an entire album of works that were either used in the film (in their entirety) or considered for inclusion. (A Clockwork Orange: Wendy Carlos's Complete Original Score, first released in 1972 as Walter Carlos' Clockwork Orange).

Carlos also began reading A Clockwork Orange, and noticed that the opening themes reflected the feeling of the first chapters of the book. Thereafter the piece developed, in Carlos' own words, into "an autonomous composition with an uncanny affinity for 'clockwork'", the last word being Carlos' way of referring to the book. When the film version was announced Carlos and producer Rachel Elkind made a demonstration recording for Kubrick, who became interested and invited them to meet him in London.
