You will now notice a new thing on the playlists: the producer(s). I felt that posting the playlists and not mentioning the producer was a grave error in judgment so I corrected that. I mean, who makes these CDs sound so good? Over the course of time I began adding other bits of data in the playlists which are posted on Folkdj-L (in the states) and Maplepost-L in Canada plus posted to over 130 people who have subscribed to the Sugar Camp playlists over the years. People have come to rely on this information. I'll comment further as to why I have added more at the appropriate time. It's a growing process here at the Camp.

Carnival d'Hiver au Québec /A QuébecWinter Carnival

It's that time of the year when the snow is deep and the ice is rock hard, a cold crisp inhalation of air freezes the inner nostrel and you need to party. So since we can't just leave the sugar camp and go to the best winter party in the world in Québec City, we sat around the cabin and just imagined being there. Here comes the playlist to take us away; who better to lead off than:

LA BOTTINE SOURIANTE: Reel de forgeron (trad)
Xieme: Mille-Pattes / EMI MPCD 2040 - 1998
Produced by Jean Fréchette

GILBERT TRUDEL ET SON ENSEMBLE: Reel du bonhomme (trad)
Gilbert Trudel et son ensemble: Carnival records C 517 - 1968

[From a vinyl recording that celebrates the mascot of the Winter Carnival: Le Bonhomme - the snowman with the waving hand]

GILLES LOSIER: La valse à Philippe (G Losier)
Salut, Belle Acadie: Amical AMI-2001 - 1983
Produced by Gilles Losier & Maurice Patton

[Dedicated to the great Québécois accordionist Philippe Bruneau, this is one of the most beautiful waltzes to skate to - you'd fall in love in moments!]

SCRUJ MacDUHK: La Banqueroute (trad) / La reel St-Jean (O Tiffault)
The Road to Canso: Scruj Tunes SM003 - 1999
Produced by Mark Schatz

PATTI KUSTUROK: Reel Beatrice (J Bouchard)
Y2Kusturok: PK-99-01 - 1999
Produced by Calvin Vollrath

[The above two selections are by musicians based in Manitoba who have obviously been influenced by the joys of Québec. Early joys were recorded by  Folkways in New York via Samual Gesser in Montreal. Aldor Morin was recorded on a 10 inch LP that also contained music by Jean Carignan, Madame Richard and Gerard Delorier and others. My recording has been places. I purchased it second hand and noticed that it had previously belonged to Canadian Forces Radio in Baden Baden, West Germany]

ALDOR MORIN: le reel de l'harmonica (A Morin)
Songs And Dances of Québec: Folkways FW 6951 - 1956
Produced by Moses Asch

[The next two pieces are to celebrate the up-coming Mardi-Gras. From Faubert's perspective, it's ethereal. Eddie LeJeune just passed away last week so I've featured him playing his father's composition from Cajun Louisiana. This is a bittersweet moment but it certainly captures the bittersweetness of Cajun blues]

MICHEL FAUBERT: Carême et Mardi gras (trad)
Carême et Mardi gras: Mille-Pattes MPCD 1095 - 1995
Produced by Michel Faubert

EDDIE LeJEUNE: Lacassine Special (Iry LeJeune)
Cajun Soul: Rounder Records 6013 - 1988
Produced by Ken Irwin

DOMINIQUE TREMBLAY & PHILIPPE GAGNON: la Noce à Jean-Guy (D Tremblay / P Gagnon)
Présentent avec le stainless steel: Ça roule: Polydor Medium 2917 001 - circa 1970
Produced by Dominque Tremblay & Philippe Gagnon

Eddie Lejeune: 1951 - 2001
[These two guys ended up performing on a Janis Joplin tour in 1970. They were way ahead of their time. They were doing to traditional music what bands like Les Batinses are doing to it today. So we go from the wedding to the divorce in a momentary span of 30 years!]
LES BATINSES: Les Nouveaux divorcés (trad)
Charivari: Mille-Pattes (BAT97CD) - 1997
Produced by Les Batinses

JOSEPH ALLARD: Reel des skieurs (J Allard)
Violon - Musique traditionnelle du Québec: Tamanoir MAGHCD-60 - 1989
Produced by Jean-Paul Filion

[From one of Allard's original recordings made in the mid-1920s - one of the premier recording artists of Québec, Allard influenced thousands of fiddlers from New Brunswick to Ontario. Willie Lamothe (below) was a happy, roving Québecois cowboy. A lot of people loved country & western music in Québec in the 1950s]

WILLIE LAMOTHE: J'ai Usé mes souliers
Willie Lamothe es ses cavaliers des Plaines avec Rita Germain: London MB. 24 - circa 1959

February 15 #64
Topic: Covers of Mac Beattie Songs

STEVEDORE STEVE: Log Drive On The Pickerel (S Foote)
Hard Workin' Men: Boot Records BOS 7102 - 1971
Produced by Jury Krytiuk

Mac Beattie and his band, the Ottawa Valley Melodiers (http://www.eol.ca/~gnwind/macbeattie.html)
performed up and down the Ottawa River for 5 decades (1929 - 1981). Mac, a washboard player, sung and composed dozens of great songs about the Ottawa Valley and afar. Here are some of his songs as sung by others.

HEARTWOOD: The Log Driver's Song (J M Beattie)
Heartwood: HWCD 2000 - 2000
Produced by Heartwood: Alex Sinclair, Anne Lindsay & Charlie Cares

The biggest hit of the Mac Beattie collection, this is a classic (not to be confused with Wade Hemsworth's Log Driver's Waltz). Yo Hip, Hip Ho! This was recorded by The Carleton Showband in 1976 on Any Dream Will Do; Glen Reid on his Heritage River CD; Gail Gavan and Freddy Dixon. It's been covered in performance by many others.

BARNEY McCAFFEREY: Madawaska Valley (J M Beattie)
Up The Line: Madawaska Communications NR-B - 1996
Produced by Tom McCullough and Johanna Zomers

The Madawaska River valley flows from Algonquin Park and winds its way into the Ottawa River at Arnprior. Towns include Barry's Bay, Whitney, Calabogie.

BARNEY McCAFFEREY: Michael Patrick From the Mountain (J M Beattie)
Up The Line: Madawaska Communications NR-B - 1996
Produced by Tom McCullough and Johanna Zomers

Madawaska country again: Michael Patrick from Mount St. Patrick meets Mary Ellen from Barry's Bay. She's a square dance lover who loves to yahoo; he's a young square dance caller. It was inevitable that they would meet.

DAVE BAKER: Train Wreck At Almonte (J M Beattie)
Songs and Sounds of Canadian Steam: Country Coast Productions CCP04 - 1997
Produced by Dave Baker & Ed Molyski

Mac Beattie served overseas during WW2. In early 1943 his mother wrote him telling of a tragic train wreck that occurred just after Christmas celebrations. A troop train crashed into a passenger train stopped at Almonte station causing numerous deaths and injuries so Mac wrote this song which was eventually covered by Barry Luft and Tim Rogers on their 1983 LP 'Songs of the Iron Rail'. Dave Baker, from BC, learned this song from that album and recorded it. Mac recorded it twice on different albums.

THE BLACKFLIES: Northern Ontario Blues (J M Beattie & Steve Fruitman)
Poutine: Blackfly BFCD1 - 1997
Produced by John Switzer

The only known version recorded other than by the Melodiers. This version includes a secret third verse approved by Marie Beattie, Mac's widow. I claim that it was given to me one day up on top of Mount St. Patrick overlooking the Ottawa Valley. Mac Beattie - who died in 1982 - came out of the sky and recited it to me. The song is also the theme song of the Northern Lights Festival Boreal in Sudbury, ON. The board of directors of the festival open the annual event by singing this song on stage.

GAIL GAVAN: The Blue Laurentians of the Valley (J M Beattie)
For The Love of the Valley Vol. 2: no label or serial - 1993
Produced by Ted Gerow

Gail Gavan grew up listening to Mac Beattie perform at her father's hotel. She has included at least six of Mac's compositions on her albums. This is the most beautiful of them all, a poignant and romantic look at the valley that Mac composed in the 1940s. His own recording of it was poorly produced with slap-back effects and a cheesy organ so this version does the song more justice.

GAIL GAVAN: Gavin's Hotel At Quyon, Quebec (J M Beattie)
For The Love of the Valley Vol. 1: no label or serial - 1991
Producer: Unlisted

Gail's father, Lennox, owned a hotel in Quyon, Quebec, where Mac Beattie used to perform. They became great friends and Mac wrote this song about the place.

MAX KEEPING: Max Keeping Speaks about Mac Beattie / 2 Poems (J M Beattie)
Freddy Dixon's Tales & Legends of the Ottawa Valley: Rodeo International RLPCD 8043 - 1995
Produced by Freddy Dixon & Terry Carisse

Max Keeping, the Ottawa news anchor,
was a dear friend of Mac Beattie. Here, on Freddy Dixon's CD
(which also includes Fred's rendition of the Log Driver's Song)

he speaks highly about Mac Beattie and recites two of his unpublished poems.

FLAPJACK: Little Shack Up The Pontiac (J M Beattie)
Demo CDR: unreleased - 2001
(Rough Mix)
Produced by Nik Tjelios

Formerly known as Garrison Creek, Flapjack are currently working on their first CD which will include this version of Little Shack. This is another great favourite among Mac Beattie fans. Glen Reid also recorded this on Heritage River, his first Cd. The blackflies also covered it in performance, as did Ian Bell's Dawnbreakers who actually recorded it and by sheer mistake, failed to get it onto their cassette! This version by Flapjack will be ready for human consumption sometime this spring.

GAIL GAVAN: True North Polka (J M Beattie)
For The Love of the Valley Vol. 2: no label or serial - 1993
Produced by Ted Gerow

This was known originally as the Washboard Polka and Mac recorded it as such. However, according to his wife, Marie, he renamed it around 1967, painted a Centennial symbol on his washboard and renamed the song. This is the only recording under the newer title.

GAIL GAVAN: Old Tyme Fiddler's Dream (J M Beattie)
For The Love of the Valley Vol. 2: no label or serial - 1993
Produced by Ted Gerow

The dream takes us to Ward Allen's Maple Sugar land; Don Messer's Breakdown; Winston 'Scotty' Fitzgerald's Big John McNeil and Reg Hill's Sleigh Ride Reel. The song also mentions Canadian fiddle greats Al Cherney, Graham Townsend and Johnny Mooring. While Reg Hill was a long time member of the Melodiers, his successor Peter Dawson was recruited by Gail Gavan to record the fiddle parts on her two cassettes.

MAC BEATTIE & THE OTTAWA VALLEY MELODIERS: Maple Sugar Blues (J M Beattie)
Sing A Song: Banff Rodeo RBS 1242 - circa 1966

The death of Ward Allen (composer of Back To The Sugar Camp) in 1965 left a lot of musicians and music lovers numb. He was a super-star of the fiddle hoe-down world. He was also a member of a rival gang of musicians in the Ottawa Valley known as the Happy Wanderers with Bob King. This is a lovely tribute to Ward Allen by the Melodiers.

TAMARACK: Saturday Night Up The Gatineau (J M Beattie)
The Fifteenth Anniversary Concert: SGB Productions SGB 25 - 1993
Produced by Jeff Bird & James Gordon

The Gatineau Hills on the Quebec side of the valley are part of the blue Laurentians. Places like Wakefield, Low, Quyon, Chapeau, Waltham, Portage du Fort, Cheneaux, Fort Colounge, Bristol, Fort William, Sheenborough and Chichester, Poltimore, Otter Lake, etc., Always a party time! This is a live collection of performers on stage to celebrate Tamarack's fifteenth anniversary at a concert in Guelph in 1993. They ended the show with this number which then goes into a number of reels. Musicians included James Gordon, Alex Sinclair, Ian Bell, Jeff Bird, The Bird Sisters, Shelley Coopersmith, Melanie Doane, Tony Quarrington, Jane Siberry, Randy Sutherland, Gwen Swick, Margo Timmins and David Woodhead. And more even...

ELLE: A Perfect Ratio (Elle)
Insomnia: no label or serial - 2000
Produced by L. Stu Young & Elle

(Elle is a Toronto based singer/songwriter with an edge. She's emotive, powerful and highly skilled and comes in a nicely wrapped package. She's mysterious and writes to guitar riffs. I thought that I was hearing some Pink Floyd in her music but figured that she wasn't old enough to have paid much attention to them - but I was wrong. Well I was right but I was wrong. It's good to be both sometimes. She claims that The Far Side of the Moon made an everlasting influence on her when she was just a wee thing.)

Okay, here's another addition to the playlists: I realized that it might be a good thing to say where these artists are from / or based. Or is that baste? I think I'm eating too much pie. I also started using recordings I made of peoples' wood stoves. Just opening up the door and shoving in some wood and closing the door and walking away.

[Mike McKenna is a Toronto based blues guitarist who has been performing since the early 1960s with bands such as Luke & The Apostles, The Ugly Ducklings, McKenna-Mendleson Mainline, Downchild Blues Band, Slidewinder and others. [Many of the Liverpool based rock bands of the early '60s were heavily influenced by the sounds created by Buddy Holly. (The Holly's were named after him). The following records shows just how much of Holly's style penetrated rock music. Indeed, Buddy Holly was one of the building blocks of modern pop music. The western swing, Texas blues and Tex-Mex sounds were mixed with rock-a-billy, plus a great debt to Elvis and the Memphis sound. Buddy Holly's brief career as a star is all that more remarkable when you consider its length: 18 months. He first recorded when he was 18 and died at the age of 22]

[This next number was recorded in Holly's home on his own equipment in Lubbock Texas in 1956. He was probably just playing around with tape recording technology but also sub-consciously producing a demo. His early recordings for the Decca Company (recorded shortly after this time) in Tennessee went nowhere. He subsequently recorded for Texas based Coral Records, sometimes under the name Buddy Holly, other times as The Crickets]

[Heartbeat, a British cop show set in the heart of Yorkshire, currently being shown on PBS and TV Ontario, uses this next piece as its theme song. However the cover version sounds more like the Searchers than The Crickets. Holly's original version had more of a Tex-Mex country sound to it than the Liverpool sound used in the theme]

[The following song is about the town of Frank, Alberta. Almost 100 years ago this prosperous coal mining town met its infamous fate when half the mountain came sliding down into the mouth of the Crow's Nest Pass. Indian legends claimed that the mountain moved, that one should avoid it at all costs. Mining magnates saw things differently: money through exploitation; the Indians don't know what they're talking about. Then on April 22, 1903 in the wee hours of the morning, the mountain came tumbling down. One third of the town of Frank was buried beneath huge boulders and everybody under it died except a baby girl who was called Frank Slide]

WILF CARTER: Rescue at the Moose River Mine (W Carter)
from 78 rpm: RCA Victor - 1936

[Wilf Carter was a real peoples' man. He wrote about real people and their plights. Many of his great compositions are now historic documents, retelling events in living colour. Like many folk singers he documented important events shortly after they happened. This was the way to preserve the memory while the event was still beating in the soul. Nowadays it almost seems exploitive and crude to sing about the misfortunes of others while people still grieve, especially when the song is recorded and sold in stores. There's a fine line, to be sure, between the moral aspects of doing this, but in Wilf's time it was the thing to do; everybody wanted to have a copy of such a song. His documentary of the rescue at the Moose River gold mine in Nova Scotia was written and recorded days after the unfolding of the tragedy. His treatment of the Hindenburg disaster - recorded that very same year - is another such example]

WILF CARTER: The Hindenburg Disaster (W Carter)
from 78 rpm: RCA Victor - 1936

[Mac Beattie was serving overseas as a singnalsman during WW2 when he received word about the train wreck at Almonte, Ontario, where basketball was born. After Xmas celebrations the Pembroke Local was headed for Ottawa, packed full of people. Taking long stops at each station a troop train was gaining on them. Then, while at Amonte Station they got rear ended. As Mac says: "Through the rush of crashing coaches you could hear the dying scream". This song has also been recorded by Dave Baker who got it from an album by Barry Luft & Tim Rogers (1983) A plaque has been unveiled only recently commemorating this tragic event from December, '42]

JACK KINGSTON: Springhill Mine Explosion (J Kingston)
Springhill Mine Explosion: Birchmount Records BM 578
Wingham, ON - circa 1970

[Like Wilf Carter, many country/folk musicians chronicled tragic events of their time. Jack Kingston was such an artist who began his career in the 1940's as part of the CKNX Saturday Night Barn Dance.

Most of us have heard Ewan McColl's song about Springhill, Nova Scotia, written for the BBC. However, there were two terrible incidents in Springhill in 3 years: Kingston sings about the both event (1956 and 58)  while McColl's song relates to the 1958 event. The second song is about a Canadian registered cruise ship filled with American tourists that set out from Detroit in 1949. While berthed overnight in Toronto a fire broke out in a linen closet aboard killing hundreds of passengers in one of the most hideous tragedies in the city's history. If it weren't for the song, who'd remember? And how would they? But there are actually two songs about the Noronic - the other is by Hank Lariviere]

[What would life be like without Stompin' Tom? How many of us would know about the 19 Steel Workers who lost their lives building a bridge across Burrard Inlent linking North Vancouver with the city? This is an amazing song that pays tribute, not only to those who lost their lives, but also to those who risked their own to save others. From frogmen in the waters to others dangling from the twisted girders. From June of 1958]

[One of Lightfoot's most incredible songs! [Flapjack were originally called Garrison Creek Spelunkers, dropped the Spelunkers and played for a variety of Contra Dances. They draw their inspiration and material from old time fiddle tunes and raw Canadiana, thus their love for Mac Beattie songs. The CD was recorded in Buckhorn - in the Kawartha Lakes region of Ontario - in a square timbered log house that Karen and Jay currently live in - with only one mic and a mini disc recorder and it sounds just great. We had a real hootenanny at the Sugar Camp, gathered round the fire pit on this incredibly warm, summer-like evening]

[I gave Karen a Porcupine Award in 2000 for this composition. She was inspired by some lyrics collected by Edith Fowke and stayed true to the sounds of the logging era of the 19th Century. The Opeongo Line was surveyed in the 1850s to bring settlers into the backwoods of Ontario. It ran from the Ottawa River to Algonquin Park, passing the towns of Renfrew, Killaloe, Wilno, Barry's Bay, Whitney and Madawaska (the stompin' grounds of Mac Beattie). It was primarily used as a logging road, especially in the winter when teamsters used to trudge back and forth with supplies for the bush camps]

THREE UGLY GUYS: The Leafs Are Gonna Win (B Fullbrook / D Saint)
Independent Cassette
Pefferlaw / Toronto ON
Produced by Blain Fullbrook & Doug Saint - 1993

[I hate the Toronto Maple Leafs and usually only play this song to jinx them from winning in the playoffs. This was recorded by ugly two guys: Blain Fullbrook and Doug Saint who, together, were greater than the sum of their parts. In this patriotic hockey jingle they make fun of Wayne Gretzkey and his then team, the LA Kings, claiming that after the Leafs get through with them they'll be hitting golf balls for the summer. This was in 1993. The Leafs were losers that year and it was they who hit the golf links first - not Gretzkey! I have used this whenever Toronto poses a real threat and it always seems to ensure their ultimate defeat. I'm just playing the Devil's advocate - really!]

I seem to have lost the playlists for July, 2001! What the hell happened to 'em? Beats me! They just went away. So I am not too sure which edition number to put on the following shows. An archivist's nightmare.

The following program was aired when I came back from Newfoundland and Labrador in August so I did miss a few shows in July - that could be why there are some playlists missing. I followed along the St Lawrence River through Quebec to the Maritimes, Cape Breton, Newfoundland and its Port au Port Penninsula, up to the east coast of Labrador and back again.

September 27
(Steve's Away - Pat Simmonds is Guest-host at the Camp)

I got ill this fall and missed some programs. I mean, it took a case of deep veined thrombosis to keep me away from the Sugar Camp. While staying at home all week reading Solomon Gursky Was Here, doing the program was the only thing I really looked forward to doing. Doing radio is very thereputic! Meanwhile, CIUT alumni Rick Fielding had been diagnosed with cancer and I told him that whatever happened, just go in and do your show because it's the best thing for you. He did and got better, only to have a relapse in 2003. He passed on in March, 2004
