Jaime Royal "Robbie" Robertson
b. July 5, 1943 Toronto

Everybody knows who Robbie Robertson is from his years with The Band. He was raised in Toronto, half Jewish and half Mohawk. He suffered a lot of discrimination as a kid and never felt at home in Toronto. He first became aware of the power of music when he visited the Six Nations Reserve when he was only 8. He remembered being in a house of some relatives and they were singing songs and playing guitars. It was the rhythm, fingers on strings, voices blending together in unison that he found so mesmerizing.

The four original members were students at Hollywood High School and were signed to a recording contract by Capitol Records, after one of Capitol's executives saw them at a talent show at that school in 1956. All four original members went on to become big time producers of tv, movies and records. Glen Larson was the creator of the original Battlestar Gallactica series featuring Lorne Green as Adama.  My own copy of the record had been previously owned by Sue Grocott of Chatham ON, hometown of Sylvia Tyson.

Kirkland was in his early 20s when he recorded his 3 vinyl albums. He was voted "Best Drummer" by NOW magazine's readers consecutively for 6 years (1996–2001) in their annual Reader's Poll. The runner-up in each of these 6 years was Neil Peart of Rush.

Four New Jersey Boys: Frankie Valli's first commercial release was "My Mother's Eyes" (as Frankie Valley) in 1953. The following year, he and guitarist Tommy DeVito formed The Variatones. They eventually became the Four Lovers but after a successful debut hit song, "You're the Apple of My Eye", they flopped around for a few years. Then, around 1960 they took the name of a local bowling alley: Four Seasons. After that they could do no wrong. Apparently, Frankie Valli is still out there performing at 90!

Jimmy Ray Dean
b. August 10, 1928 Plainview, TX / d. June 13, 2010 (81) Varina, Virginia

Big Bad John won Dean the 1962 Grammy Award for Best Country & Western Recording. Country pianist Floyd Cramer, who was hired to play piano on the song, came up with the idea to use a hammer and a piece of steel instead. This became a distinctive characteristic of the recording.

Country Yossi, an Orthodox Jewish composer and singer, parodied "Big Bad John" as "Big Bad Moish".  The song's title has also been the target of many jokes, in reference to toilets.

After releasing two so-so albums, Beefheart and his magical band were signed to Zappa’s Straight Records, releasing, first, Trout Mask Replica – an amazing double album, and Lick My Decals Off, Baby, before Frank and The Captain had a falling out. I always liked this song and can’t believe I’ve never played it on the radio before. The rhythm on this track is extra-ordinary! Everyone seems to be playing a different pattern and yet, it all linked up together. This album came out right after Trout Mask Replica.

1.   Buddy Burk & Canadian Meteors: That Big Old Moon
(G Roberts / F Fredericks)
45 Single: Regency Records - 686X
Kahshe River ON

Produced 1957
Recorded by Bullseye Records

Robert William "Buddy" Burk

In the late 1950s, Toronto was all about rockabilly. The early rock 'n' roll country sound was popular at the bars and taverns along the Yonge Street Strip. And one of the best songs to come out of the scene was "That Big Old Moon" by Buddy Burke & the Canadian Meteors. This was back in the days before CanCon regulations made the Canadian music industry a viable enterprise, so the band headed down to New York City to record the single. It came out in 1957 and it was a hit — it even scored a spot on the Billboard Top 100.

Eventually, Burke would move out of Toronto and head up into cottage country. He was still plugging away at music as recently as 2007, when he released a new jazz record from his new home near Gravenhust in Muskoka.

b. Arrow River MB Dec 23rd, 1918 / d. November 8th, 2011 (92) Brandon MB

This song is about the survival of the big, white, fluffy polar bear. “Can’t you just see one!” asked Gurr when I met with him, loving the words to the song. It protests the senseless cruelty of hunters who are after trophy rugs for their floors at the expense of these incredible creatures. He also wrote songs about magpies and hogs (which he claims are ‘beau-ti-ful’).

Keith John Moon
b 23 August 1946 Wembley,  England / d. 7 Sept 1978 (32) Mayfair, London

Moon joined his local Sea Cadet Corps band at the age of twelve on the bugle, but found the instrument too difficult to learn and decided to take up drums instead. He took lessons from one of the loudest contemporary drummers, Screaming Lord Sutch's Carlo Little, at 10 shillings per lesson. Moon's early style was influenced by jazz, American surf music and rhythm and blues. He admired Hal Blaine, Gene Krupa (whose flamboyant style he subsequently copied), Elvis Presley's original drummer DJ Fontana, and the Shadows' original drummer Tony Meehan. He couldn’t remember actually joining The Who when they were still The Escorts in 1964. Ringo Starr once asked him how he had joined the band, he said he had "just been filling in for the last fifteen years." He totally changed the band’s sound with his sonic attack of the drumkit.

Smash Your Head was the first solo album by any member of The Who. After joining the pre-Who “Detours”, Entwistle played a major role in encouraging Pete Townshend's hidden guitar talents, and insisting that Townshend be admitted into the band. Detours leader, Roger Daltrey, fired all the members of his band with the exception of Entwistle, Townshend and the drummer, Doug Sandom, relinquishing the role of guitarist to Pete Townshend in 1963, becoming lead vocalist. Entwistle died in Room 658 at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Paradise, Nevada, on 27 June 2002, one day before the scheduled first show of the Who's 2002 US tour.
