Terry MacNeil: guitar
William "Truckaway" Sievers: guitar
Martin Beard: bass
Norman Mayell: drums
Produced by Erik Jacobsen, 1967
Recorded by Val Valentin
“Would you like some of my tangerine”.
These guys were the perfect psychedelic band with a jugband feel. Unfortunately they only released one ‘real’ album; they did another one in 1973, five years after the initial band broke up. Hello Hello was their first single, rag-timey with a bass solo and a very live feel. After buying the single I looked out for the album which I bought at Sam’s on Yonge St. Loved the cover and loved this band.

Austin TX
Roky Erickson: guitar, vocal
Tommy Hall: electric jug, vocal
Stacy Sutherland: guitar, vocal
Danny Thomas drums, vocals
Benny Thurman bass, vocals
Produced by Lelan Rogers, 1966
One of the very first groups to be called phsychedelic. A special aspect of The Elevators' sound came from Tommy Hall's innovative electric jug. The jug, a crock-jug with a micro-phone held up to it while it was being blown, sounded somewhat like a cross between a minimoog and cuica drum (the tone it produces has a high-pitched squeaky timbre. It has been called a 'laughing gourd' due to this sound). In contrast to traditional musical jug technique, Hall did not blow into the jug to produce a tuba-like sound. Instead, he vocalized musical runs into the mouth of the jug, using the jug to create echo and distortion of his voice.

Sam & Dave were formed in 1961 in Miami, Florida. They met while performing at Miami nightclubs and decided to team up as a duo. Sam & Dave were considered to be the most successful soul duo of the sixties. While Motown was owning the R&B charts, the Stax Records sound penetrated their hold with artists like Aretha Franklin and Sam & Dave. Sam & Dave were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992. Soul Man" was used by The Blues Brothers (John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd) in the late 1970s, introducing the song to a new generation of fans.

Kid King’s Combo represents an important, though often overlooked, chapter in the story of American music, particularly in the transition from blues and R&B to the birth of rock and roll. King's Combo, the band known for recording the song "Banana Split," was a French rock and roll group led by American ex-pat, drummer Kid King. Kid King's Combo is remembered for their contributions to the rock and roll genre in France. "Banana Split" remains a significant part of their legacy and reflects the rock and roll style that was emerging in Europe during the late 1950s.

He spent many years travelling through Europe, in Japan and finally India where he looked up Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, inventor of the Mohan Veena.
The Mohan Veena, a slide guitar developed by Indian musician V.M. Bhatt. It is a hybrid instrument that combines elements of the slide guitar and traditional Indian instruments. It typically has a resonator and multiple strings, allowing for a wide range of tonal possibilities. Manx has mastered this instrument and uses it to create a distinctive sound that merges blues and Indian music traditions.

Burman is credited with spotting Kumar's talent for singing. Kumar eventually developed his own style of singing, which featured yodeling, which he had heard on the records of Tex Morton and Jimmie Rodgers. Sholay was the first Indian film to have a stereophonic soundtrack and to use the 70 mm widescreen format.

Danielle Martineau started playing accordion in a Montreal based Cajun band Joséphine before forming Rockabayou who released two albums of material in the 1990s. I was asked to play washboard and triangle for them several times. We did the Montreal 350th anniversary concert before 10,000 people in a free concert downtown Montreal. We also did the Governor General’s Tea Party for Canada Day and they flew me in to Montreal to record and appear in their video. My washboard was double tracked for this album.

Robert David: guitar, vocal
Joellen Housego
Marc Gagnon: bg vocal
Jordan Officer: archtop guitar and fiddle
Produced by Robert David & JD Belanger, 2003
Mastered by Jon Van Wingerden, Audio Valley Recording Studio
Robert David was a little known singer-songwriter outside of Montreal who put out a few cassettes and a CD of his eclectic songs. What I like about his recorded work is that it’s raw, emotional and far reaching and certainly not very commercial. East of the Sun is maybe an exception to that. After playing this song once before, I received an email from Robert David:
Howdy Steve
a short note to thank you for the spin and nod you gave to my music Nov 7 2021.
Cris Cuddy FWD'd me your playlist from that show. I'm curious to know what song was on the demo ? East of the Sun on the album had Jordan Officer on archtop and fiddle.
I'm doing well and still putting out songs will send you some once they get properly recorded. BTW Russell de Carle covered East of the Sun on his album Under a Big sky
Michael Jerome Browne covered Pretty Calico (many thousand go) on one of his recordings.. can't recall ...it was an early album. Both his cover and Russell's were the real deal ..they owned the tunes. Jordan Officer is at the top of his game in Quebec.. he has become "quite the vedette " as we say
stay safe and well

b. Calgary AB Nov 15, 1967
She only released two really good albums of her music and currently spends most of her energy painting abstract canvasses in really cool colours. This album – her second called ‘Sweet’, should have spurred her career along but didn’t. It’s a great album and I love this song, Everyday. Just great players were used and James Stephens (of Six Mile Bridge) has his fingerprints all over it – in a good way. Jennifer’s still involved with music but hasn’t submitted a third CD of original songs yet but I hear she’s working on it.

Watertown was really a solo project of singer Scott Dibble, a friend of Bare Naked Ladies and other Queen Street West acts of the late 1980s. It was named after the town where Dibble resided, close to Hamilton ON. Released first on Blue Rodeo’s label, Risque Disk, the album was eventually turned over to WEA but didn’t go anywhere. Dibble then retreated back behind the sound board for future endeavors.

Produced by Danny Greenspoon, 1989
Recorded by Steve Smith at Mushroom Studios, Vancouver
Mixed by Danny Greenspoon and Jeff Wolpert at Vancouver Studios, Burnaby
A Legendary west coast band out of Vancouver that flirted with the big time but was just too original to sustain it. Still, they released 9 albums and a Greatest Hits compilation between the years 1983 and 2006. They only quit after lead singer and songwriter John Mann faced significant health challenges related to early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. His condition made it increasingly difficult for him to perform and tour so they called it a day. Mann passed away on November 15, 2019.

This album was made in Canada but most likely produced in Spain for a special Canadian tour in 1996. The song Amway is a great symbiosis of Basque and Zydeco, taking the melody from legendary accordionist Clifton Chenier.

The Great Debate: DTK Records Kill006
Fredericton NB
Lloyd Hanson: bass, drum programming, guitar, synth

Minneapolis MN
Tony Anderson: lead guitar
Dal Winslow: guitar
Bob Reed: bass
Steve Wahrer: drums, woodpecker vocals
Produced by George Garrett, 1964
There were two sides to The Trashmen: the Surfin’ Bird side and the Venture’s side and this one sort of straddles them both. It was The Bird Dance Beat, on the flip side of the band’s answer to their surprise hit, Surfin’ Bird. An A-Bone was a Ford Model A Tudor Sedan used for hot-rodding in the 1950s. The Shelby Cobra was a Ford built V-8 produced since 1962. Chevy’s answer to that was the Corvette Stingray. Anyway, a great surf rocking song from Minnesota.

Richmond Hill punk band that were way ahead of their time! They only released one album in 1969 but after a few decades in the darkness, the album saw the light of day again after being picked up for international release by Hallucination Records in 2009. Feel it was their only single.

Recorded by Michel Ethier
Raôul Duguay
b. February 13, 1939, Val-d'Or QC
He has been an active performer since 1966. He was considered to be like the Frank Zappa of Quebec. He spelled his words with circumflexes and umlauts where none should exist; used weird spelllings and effeccccts; blended traditional forms of turlotte in with experimental jazz in complicated arrrrangementtts.
He met Walter Boudreau in 1967, and the two artists formed L'Infonie shortly thereafter. This project was intended both as a music group and a new approach to collective improvisation; Duguay published its manifesto in 1970. The group released a number of albums on the avant-garde side of Quebec's progressive rock and jazz-rock scenes before dissolving in 1973. A sovereignist, he described Canada as a father who "never gave mother [Quebec] an orgasm." He went on to release 13 solo albums and several books of poetry.

Mixed by André Marchand and Mathieu Girard
Mastered by Diane Leboeuf at Sono Design, Montréal
One of the newer trad bands of Quebec that emulated La Bottine Souriante’s way of making traditional music sound ancient and new! Formed in 1994 they were known for utilizing the Turlutte (mouth music) so popular with pickup musicians who do not read music. They used the turlutte to teach each other tunes. Les Batinses released five CDs of this type of material, pushing the boundaries of trad music.
15. Mother Tucker’s Yellow Duck: Little Pony
(Don McDougall / Roger Law / Pat Caldwell)
Homegrown Stuff: Duck Records / Capitol Records - ST-6304
Vancouver BC
Pat Caldwell: vocal, harmonica
Charlie Faulkner: bass
Roger Law: guitar
Hugh Lockhead: drums
Don McDougall: guitar
Produced by Robin Spurgin, 1969
This Vancouver band started out in the later part of the 1960s as a joke, with only one guy who could actually play. Over the next year they put together a real band and released One Ring Jane as a single in the US but it wasn’t promoted. That was when they formed their own Duck Records and recorded their first album featuring a re-recorded version of One Ring Jane. Bonded with the San Francisco music scene, the album did rather well considering it didn’t get much airplay. They went on to tour with the Yardbirds, Alice Cooper, opened for Cream and Deep Purple before calling it quits in the early 1970s.
