Falsetto! Who sings in falsetto anymore? But back in doo wop era, it was a much more common thing for guys to do. Frankie Valli, Smokey Robinson, The Beachboys, Prince and Jeff Buckley were some who utilized the upper register. Oh, and then there was Tiny Tim.

I haven’t really listened to this song in a long time and it really struck me how close the rhythm section is to reggae. Just slow it down some and you’ll agree.

5.   The Guess Who: Two Wheel Freedom

45 rpm bw same song: RCA Victor - T-55829
Winnipeg MB
Randy Bachman: guitar
Burton Cummings: keys, vocals
Gary Peterson: drums

Produced for Hondo Motorcycles, 1968

A very rare single sided 7” recording for the Honda Motorcycle Co. If you check out the Guess Who’s discography, you won’t find mention of this release. In the 1960s, the Honda Motor Corporation of Japan launched their light weight, four-stroke motorcycles in North America. In Canada they combined with Pepsi-Cola to launch a ‘Pepsi Win A Honda’ Contest. Prizes were hidden under the cork of the bottle caps. The band were just getting their second wind, recovering from the frozen days after their early success with Shakin’ All Over with Burton Cummings taking over the lead vocals from Chad Allen.

In the fall of 1959, sixteen-year-old high school student Bobby Curtola went from pumping gas at his father’s garage in Thunder Bay, Ontario, to the life of a Teen Idol. Who would have known that within a year he would go from playing in his basement band “Bobby and the Bobcats” to recording his first hit single “Hand In Hand With You”. After performing on the Bob Hope Show in 1960, the charismatic Bobby, with his handsome boy next door looks, was quickly finding himself within a whirlwind that we now refers to as “Curtolamania.”

Ian Tyson would recall "Four Strong Winds" as the first song he ever wrote, and credit Bob Dylan for inspiring Tyson to follow into writing "original folk songs. "(As a songwriter) Bob blazed the trail into the wilderness, into unknown territory."  Tyson remembered meeting up with Dylan in the autumn of 1962 at the Kettle of Fish in Greenwich Village. Tyson recalls Dylan telling him, 'I got this new song I just wrote' and he sang me 'Blowin' in the Wind'. And I thought: “I can do that,” and the next day I wrote 'Four Strong Winds'."

Tyson explained that he asked Dylan's manager Albert Grossman "who was the only one [on the scene] that had a roof over his head:"...'Can I use your apartment tomorrow, cause I want to try and write a song?'" Grossman said sure. I went over there and opened up the guitar case and started to fooling around and strumming. And it took half an hour" to writ "Four Strong Winds". Although Tyson's personal favorite of his compositions is "Summer Wages", he recalls realizing "Four Strong Winds" "was pretty good because [when] I sang it in the folk clubs it blew everybody away".

The song has been recorded by many artists, including Hank Snow, The Seekers, Judy Collins, the Chad Mitchell Trio, Bob Dylan, Marianne Faithfull, The Searchers, John Denver, The Kingston Trio, Trini Lopez, Waylon Jennings, Bobby Bare, Chad and Jeremy, The Wolfe Tones, The Tragically Hip, Joan Baez, Vanity Fare, Glenn Yarborough, Harry Belafonte, Tony Rice, Johnny Cash, The Carter Family, Sarah McLachlan, David Wiffen, Hep Stars, Les Contretemps, Neil Young, Mickey and Bunny and Schooner Fare.

16. James Gordon: Five Penis Wine
(J Gordon)
Tune Cooties: Independent PSR19
Guelph ON
James Gordon: all instruments, vocals
Produced by James Gordon, 2002

James had a great gig, listening to last week’s edition of CBC Radio’s popular Saturday morning program, Basic Black with Arthur Black. It was James’ job to write a humorous song about something said on the last show and have it ready, totally produced, by Saturday’s broadcast. He did that for years. So this was a story about a Chinese wine made with the penises of five different animals. A subject long begging for a song. Obviously!

Clarke ran away from home when he was 17 years old and hitchhiked to California to become a musician. He had played the drums before but, after joining the Byrds, not having a drum set, practiced on a makeshift kit of cardboard boxes[1] and a tambourine.  Roger McGuinn's web site, Clarke was hired by McGuinn and Gene Clark for his resemblance to Rolling Stones' guitarist Brian Jones. In 1981, when getting time at a real recording studio was a big thing, Mose recorded his first album with Bruce Cockburn producing. The back cover features a caricature of Mose drawn by Redbone. They got to open for the Beach Boys at the Pavilon Skating Rink in Huntington Beach, California on Feb 8, 1964 if it was the same Surf Riders. There was also a Surf Riders band from Minnesota, and ex-Byrd Gene Clark was in a Surf Riders band in Kansas before he joined the New Christy Minstrels and made his way to LA.

Johnny Kitchen was a bit of an enigma in the music scene; no one knew who he actually was until recently. His real name was Jack Maurice Millman (b. Canada, Nov 1930). He helped produced and record the Wild Man Fisher album that Frank Zappa put out on his Bizarre Records label.

On cover it states that “Home Taping Sucks. Please Be Cool.” That was the great fear in the music industry in the 1980s: criminals with fingers on the record button of their tape recorders, dubbing their records to listen on their Walkman’s or in their cars which was completely illegal.  So the industry went on the offensive and offended an entire generation of music lovers who soon discovered Napster’s free mp3s.

13. The Gleasonaires: Fifteen Years Ago
(Raymond A Smith)
Love Gets Sweeter: Boot Records – BOS 7104
Toronto ON
Matt Gleason: lead vocalist
Jim Prince: lead guitar
Hal Allison: rhythm guitar
Produced by Jury Krytiuk & Mark Altman, 1971
Recorded by George Simkiw & Cub Richardson at RCA Studios, Toronto

In 1971 Stompin’ Tom Connors founded Boot Records with his two junior partners, Jury Krytiuk and Mark Altman. Other than Tom’s music, the group produced and distributed music of other Canadian musicians, mostly country, but diverse as classical guitarist Liona Boyd. The  Gleasonaires were one of the first acts signed to the label and released this one album. The cover was pretty crass though: It’s pink with two arrow shooting cupids on either side of a large heart containing the picture of the Gleasonaires trio, in their polyester stage uniforms standing around a fake beehive with little plastic bees crawling on it. It was the fourth album released by Boot. I have no idea what happened to the band after that.

Cable studied piano, clarinet, and oboe, and played in the Parkdale Collegiate Institute orchestra under Leslie Bell. While leading a dance band, the Cavaliers, 1935-41 in Toronto, he studied at the Toronto Conservatory of Music with Sir Ernest MacMillan. Cable composed and arranged the original theme for the Hockey Night in Canada television broadcast, The Saturday Game, which opened the broadcast from 1952 until 1968. He was a guest conductor with Symphony Nova Scotia and its predecessor “The Altlantic Symphony Orchestra” for over 30 years. In 1999, he was made a Member of the Order of Canada.

A very interesting 45! Stompin’ Tom on one side (doing the Snowmobile Song) and Howard Cable on the other. It was a promotional single for the Muskoka Winter Carnival for 1971.

On Saturday, April 16, 1960, at about 11.50 p.m., while on tour in the United Kingdom, 21-year-old Cochran was involved in a traffic accident in a taxi. The speeding taxi blew a tire, the driver lost control, and the vehicle crashed into a lamppost. He died of severe head injuries at 4:10 p.m. the following day. David Harman, a police cadet at the station, who would later become known as Dave Dee of the band Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich, taught himself to play guitar on Cochran's impounded Gretsch.

"Twenty Flight Rock" is a song originally performed by Eddie Cochran in the 1956 film comedy The Girl Can't Help It. The barely 15-year-old Paul McCartney used "Twenty Flight Rock" as his first song when he auditioned for John Lennon on July 6, 1957.
