La Bottine Souriante means the happy boot and celebrates traditional music du Quebec by rocking out to infectious boot tapping jazz. They started out in 1976 after Rene Levesque’s Parti Quebecois came to office. Usually a four piece – sometimes five – then after several albums they became a machine. With the addition of a four piece brass section, La Bottine decided it was time to up the game a bit with fabulous jazz infused arrangements to traditional songs and tunes.

En Spectacle was recorded live in Montreal in 1996 and the crowd went wild. This was just the first cut on the album and they’ve already drove the crowd insane.

3.   La Bottine Souriante: Le reveillon du jour de l’an
(trad)
Tout comme au jour de l'an: Mille-Pattes - MP-2035
Joliette QC
Michel Bordeleau, mandolin, mandola

André Marchand, guitar, feet
Martin Racine, violin, mandola
Réjean Archambault, bass
Denis Fréchette, piano
Mario Forest, spoons
Produced by Mario Forest 1987
Recorded by André L’esperance & André Marchand

This was a song about new year’s played before invited guests of the band to give it that live, party fever in the traditional chanson et rependre way.

Up until this time the band were a quartet playing trad music in a traditional way. With the addition of contrabasse and piano they started to swing a little more, opening the door to a jazzy horn section that would totally transform them into a dynamic force that nobody could compete with. Recipients of 3 Junos and numerous Felix Awards (in Quebec). Although they have no original members left, the band continues to wow audiences on both sides of the Atlantic.

4.   La Bottine Souriante: Reel a Ti-mile

By now there were no original members of the group anymore but that never stopped them from barreling down the tracks. A younger generation began to sit under the tutelage of the brass section. It was about the same time as some the original members began performing a bit as a Bottine alumnae band.

Alex or Aleck Ford aka Rice Miller aka Sonny Boy Williamson
b. Dec 5, 1912 Greenwood or Glendora Mississippi / d. Helena Arkansas May 24, 1965 (52)

There was always the issue of the name Sonny Boy Williamson, as the original blues singer who used that name died in 1948. Rice Miller used the name to get better gigs while the original Sonny Boy was still alive! He always claimed to be the original Sonny Boy, even though he wasn’t. Still, he was one of the greatest blues singers and blues harp players. His last recordings were made in England, backed by either The Yardbirds or The Animals.

7.   Sonny Boy Williamson: Nine Below Zero
(Rice Miller)
King Biscuit Time: Arhoolie 2020
Helena Arkansas
Sonny Boy Williamson: vocal, harmonica
Clarence Lonnie: piano
Cliff Bivins: bass
Frock: drums
Jo Willie Wilkins: guitar
Produced by Chris Strachwitz, 1970
Recorded Jackson Mississippi late 1951

This is a collection of Williamson’s earliest recordings from the early 1950s featuring three similar line ups. It’s the real deal blues in its rawest form.

8.   Sonny Boy Williamson II: Bring It On Home
(Willie Dixon)
Blues From “Big Bill’s” CopaCabana: Chess Records LPS 1533
Chicago IL
Sonny Boy Williamson: harmonica, vocal
Others not listed
Produced by Ralph Bass, 1963
Recorded at Chess Studios, Chicago by Phil Chess
Chess Records Re-Issue 1967

Originally released on Chess Records subsidiary Argo Records as ‘Folk Festival of the Blues’. While most of the tracks (featuring Willie Dixon, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf) were recorded live at Big Bill’s CopaCabana club in Chicago, Sonny Boy’s song was actually recorded at Chess studios with fake audience to simulate a live recording.

Played in Miss. 1930s mostly as Rice Miller. Contemporary  of Robert Johnson & Robert Jr. Lockwood. Played a lot w Elmore James. By 1940 he called himself after Chicago blues man Sonny Boy Williamson aka Lee Curtis Williamson who died in 1948.

In 1941 talked KFFA Radio Helena Arkansas into giving him a daily spot sponsored by the King Biscuit Flour Co thus King Biscuit Time. Did this live gig, off and on, till the day he died in 1965. Last recordings were made with the Yardbirds & Animals in UK in 1963 – 4.

9.   The Temptations: Ain’t Too Proud To Beg
(E Holland / Norman Whitfield)
Getting Ready: Gordy Records 918
Detroit MI
Otis Williams: vocals
David Ruffin: vocals
Melvin Franklin: vocals
Eddie Kendricks: vocals
Paul Williams: vocals
The Funk Brothers band
Produced by Norman Whitfield, 1966

This was Whitfield’s first jab at producing The Temptations. Until then they were under the tutelage of Smokey Robinson. Since their last hit single, ‘Get Ready’, didn’t chart very well, Whitfield was given his chance to produce them and he did his job well. The song was a mega-hit that went all the way up the Billboard charts to number 3!

10. Plaid: Melifer
(Plaid)
The Digging Remedy: Warp Records – LP277B
London UK

Produced by Plaid 2016

Plaid released their first album in 1991. They’ve collaborated with various artists over the years, including Björk.

This is their 11th LP. It was given to me by Benet Walsh whom a met in a Ludlow pub called The Blue Boar in Shropshire. Walsh plays several instruments in various different bands, like Thistletown where he played bass. Also in an old time country band where he plays banjo.

A great cover version of a Syd Barrett’s song from Pink Floyd’s first album, Piper At The Gates of Dawn. Recorded live in Lee’s Palace. I’ve heard them do other early Floyd songs at their live shows. It perfectly captures the essence of the song.

Jennifer Noxon
b. Calgary AB Nov 15, 1967

She only released two really good albums of her music and currently spends most of her energy painting abstract canvasses in really cool colours. This album – her second called ‘Sweet’, should have spurred her career along but didn’t. It’s a great album and I love this song, Everyday. Just great players were used and James Stephens (of Six Mile Bridge) has his fingerprints all over it – in a good way. Jennifer’s still involved with music but hasn’t submitted a third CD of original songs yet but I hear she’s working on it.

Released 5 May 1967

This was from the 1966-67 era that really began for me with A Well Respected Man, Dedicated Follower of Fashion, Sunny Afternoon time which ended with the album Face To Face. Ray Davies’ fragile voice cuts through to the heart and soul of London society. I remember buy it at Sam’s because I liked the title. It always leaves me wondering what that scene was like during sunset at Waterloo.

Dead End Street’s a great song from that era which ends with bedlam bells clanging ‘all right’. Dead End Street was another great song from the head of Ray Davies. A great use of horns by the Mike Cotton Sound. Individual horn player’s names were usually not mentioned.

A Liverpool band who were at the forefront of the Mercy beat along with contemporaries The Beatles, Searchers, Swinging Blue Jeans, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Billy J Kramer etc. After doing a stint in Hamburg, the band returned to the UK in 1964 and were signed to a management contract with Brian Epstein. They were supposed to appear in the 1965 Gerry & The Pacemakers film “Ferry Cross the Mersey” as the losers in a battle of the bands contest, but the footage was cut from the film's final release. They kept at it although success seemed to elude them. After opening for Jimi Hendrix and The Who on European tours.

In the latter ‘60s, they changed from R&B to a psychedelic sound but still found little to jump for joy for. They broke up in 1968, shortly before the release of their only album. Drummer Tony O’Reilly then went to play with Yes for a short time, replacing Bill Bruford.

One of the founders of The Byrds, he was the first to leave the band in early 1966 and have a solo career. He also got together with Doug Dillards of The Dillards family bluegrass band and released two albums, The Fantastic Expedition of Dillard & Clark (1968) and Through the Morning, Through the Night (1969). ‘No Other’ was Clark’s first album recorded for Asylum Records. Hits of the Yardbirds was a Canadian release by Capitol Records of Canada, most likely put together by Paul White. I bought my copy at Sayvette’s, Town & Country Square, Yonge & Steeles December 67. Side one features Jeff Beck while side 2 does Eric Clapton with the Yardbirds. Beck replaced Clapton after he left in ’65 to join John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers. Jimmy Page would soon join the Yardbirds and played with Beck until he quit the band in 1966.
