Staymer saw Louis Armstrong in the 1950s while still living in his native Germany. He also got into playing the music of Django Reinhardt. He moved to Canada in 1962, settling in Edmonton as a goldsmith. He began performing there, playing songs by blues legends like Leadbelly at local clubs which eventually saw him perform in bands. In 1968 he moved to Vancouver and formed a band called Django which lasted about four years. In 1972 he formed the Hans Staymer Band and recorded an album called “Dig A Hole” on GSF Records. In 1997 he formed a duo with another German ex-pat Andreas Schuld. Their first CD, recorded by Billo Bourne (Bourne & McLeod) received a 1997 Juno Award nomination for Best Blues Album. Originally from Kirkland Lake, both Paul, and his brother Pat, made dozens of recordings. He first stationed himself in Ottawa and Montreal, playing as a session musician on many peoples’ recordings. He was one of Graham Townsend’s favourite fiddlers. After leaving the south he returned once again to Northern Ontario, settling in North Bay where he did a bluegrass radio show for a few years.

This was the first song I ever heard by Stompin’ Tom, way before his stomping. A friend of mine in Timmins had the 45, recorded at the local radio station and it hit me the same way as my Beatle albums. Goose bumps! It’s a song about a fellow Tom met down on Barrington Street in Halifax who was down and out. The guy would do just about anything to make his wife happy but drew the line at hocking his guitar. Not as rough and robust as Tom’s later recordings but tough enough to make me a life time Stompin’ Tom fan.

45 Single bw Sudbury Saturday Night: Rebel Records - RX-104

Produced by John Irvine, 1967
Released in the spring of 1967
The Don Jail (Toronto) was built in 1864 at the corner of Broadview and Gerrard (a five minute walk from my place). It is also the place of the last Hanging to occur in Canada: Ronald Turpin and Arthur Lucas were hanged there on 11 December, 1962. It closed for good in 2014. The creepy, original building is used by Bridgepoint Hospital on what is now the Jack Layton Way.
This is a very rare recording of the song which was later re-recorded, solo, for Tom’s Tragedy Trail album. As far as I can tell, the two songs on this Rebel Records single, the last to credit Tom Connors instead of Stompin’ Tom, are the first to have Tom record with a band. Other than guitarist Roy Penny, Tom could not remember who the other musicians were.

This album was a badly produced, bush league sounding album, recorded live at the Horseshoe June 30, 1971. But it also captured the true essence of Stompin’ Tom’s live act and to this day, remains my favourite Stompin’ Tom album. It’s just like being there! So I was thrilled to receive a remastered version that makes the experience even better. The Horseshoe house band were used to back up Tom before he put his own three piece together and were featured on the live recording. After the death of lead guitarist Gerry Hall shortly after this was recorded, the band renamed themselves ‘Cabbagetown’ and made a few records. Steel and dobro player, Mickey Andrews, continued to do tours with Tom until 2012.

And some people found work on the dirty coal boats, transporting it to Newfoundland. Stompin' Tom found such work after running away from his adopted home at Skinner's Pond, PEI. This is a great song that utilizes subtle imagery from the pen of Stompin’ Tom. It was never released on vinyl. I always get this hazy blue smoke feeling whenever I listen to it. Mist hovering in the back seat of a car is a great image in a ghostly song.

This is from a true story of the MacIntyre Mine fire, written by Tom when he was living up in Timmins and still performing at The Maple Leaf Hotel. The song first appeared a 45 produced by CKGB radio on their own label QC-134 in 1965 (bw Streets of Toronto). It was then re-recorded on his first LP “The Northland’s Own…”, first on Rebel Records 1967, then re-recorded again for the same album released on Dominion Records in 1968. It was then redone with a full band for 1971s Love & Laughter LP which has since been renamed “Moon-Man Newfie” for CD.
The MacIntyre gold mine was located in the town of Schumacher, a mile outside of downtown Timmins in the Porcupine gold fields and was established by Scottish prospector Sandy MacIntyre in 1909. Schumacher was the birthplace of Toronto Maple Leaf / Montreal Canadian legends Frank and Peter Mahovlich.
