Many of their many members were also, at times, members of The Platters. (Aaron Collins September 3, 1930 – March 27, 1997). His sisters, Betty and Rose Collins, had a hit in 1956 called "Eddie My Love" as the Teen Queens.
Later in life, Collins had a ladies' shoe store in Los Angeles, California, located on the corner of Manchester and Vermont, and named Collins Shoe Closet, which was burned down in the Rodney King riots April 29, 1992.

The Flares biggest hit was the 1961 release "Foot Stompin' Part 1", which hit #20 on the Black Singles chart and #25 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was used on the soundtrack to the film ‘Hairspray’. Foot Stompin’ Pt 2 was an instrument by the same band but listed as The Ramrocks.

Lowell George met Bill Payne when George was a member of Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention. Payne had auditioned for the Mothers, but had not joined. They formed Little Feat along with former Mothers' bassist Roy Estrada. The name of the band came from a comment made by Mothers' drummer Jimmy Carl Black about Lowell's "little feet". In 1968 he moved to Vancouver and formed a band called Django which lasted about four years. In 1972 he formed the Hans Staymer Band and recorded an album called “Dig A Hole” on GSF Records. Hard to find relevant info on these guys! What I do know is they were active from 1977 to 1978 in Montreal and I’ve got both of their albums. They were a bit commercial and obviously had a lot of money thrown their way since the albums were also released across the USA. They are described as a folk band but this particular track has that McCartney-esque syncopated beat heavily used by The Beatles.

Note: not the same Lavender Hill Mob from Fresno California who broke up in 1967.

One of the better psychedelic bands in Britain that never really made it. Maybe their name had something to do with that. “Ya, I’m a Toes fan!” They recorded two albums for Marmalade Records, owned by Yardbirds and Soft Machine manager Giorgio Gomelsky. Gomelsky was from Georgia SSR and moved to London where he operated The Crawdaddy Club with The Rolling Stones as the house band. When the Stones left he hired The Yardbirds. His Marmalade label included Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger and The Trinity, Soft Machine and Gong.

After releasing two so-so albums, Beefheart and his magical band were signed to Zappa’s Straight Records, releasing, first, Trout Mask Replica – an amazing double album, and Lick My Decals Off, Baby, before Frank and The Captain had a falling out. I always liked this song and can’t believe I’ve never played it on the radio before. The rhythm on this track is extra-ordinary! Everyone seems to be playing a different pattern and yet, it all linked up together. This album came out right after Trout Mask Replica.

Around 1963, while studying history at Trinity College, Dublin, Ian Whitcomb became a founding member and lead vocalist of Dublin's early rhythm and blues band, Bluesville. After some unreleased early recordings, Whitcomb travelled to Seattle where he was signed to a deal with a small company, Jerdan Records.  His big hit, "You Turn Me On", was largely improvised at the end of a recording session in Dublin. Released as a single on the Tower label, it reached Billboard's number 8 spot in July 1965 - the first Irish-produced record to reach the US charts (even before The Bachelors) but it was not released in Britain. During his summer vacation in 1965, Whitcomb went to America to appear on such television programs as Shindig, Hollywood A Go-Go and American Bandstand. He played the Hollywood Bowl with The Beach Boys in 1965 and then toured with The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, and Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs.

After making four albums for the Tower label, Whitcomb retired as a pop performer, later writing that he "wanted no part of the growing pretentiousness of rock with its mandatory drugs and wishy-washy spiritualism and its increasing loud and metallic guitar sounds."

Whitcomb suffered several years of poor health after a stroke in 2012. He died on 19 April 2020, in the Los Angeles area from complications of the stroke that he suffered in 2012.

Keith John Moon
b. 23 August 1946 / d.  7 September 1978 (32)

On The Who’s second album, A Quick One, their manager Chris Lambert threw them an idea so that the individual members of the group could make a bit of cash. Why not all four members go home and write some songs for the album? So Daltry wrote one, Entwistle a couple and so did Keith Moon.

Moon joined his local Sea Cadet Corps as a bugler but changed to drums. Quit school at 14 & took drum lessons as a teen. Moon's early style was influenced by jazz, American surf music and rhythm and blues, exemplified by noted Los Angeles studio drummer Hal Blaine. His favourite musicians were jazz artists, particularly Gene Krupa. His first band was The Escourts. After playing with a local London band, the Beachcombers, he joined the Who in 1964 before they recorded their first single. He was posthumously inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1982, becoming only the second rock drummer to be chosen, and in 2011, Moon was voted the second-greatest drummer in history by a Rolling Stone readers' poll.

Most people first got to notice Washboard Hank when he was a member of Reverend Ken and His Lost Followers, from his playing of the PVC fallopian tuba with a kitchen sink attached. Later he put his own band together: Washboard Hank and the Honkers. They recorded songs like Stompin’ Tom For Priminister and Polyester Polly Lit a Tire Fire in my Heart. Later he got together with Lance Loree and Ronnie Hayward as the Country Squires.

Hank plays a unique form of washboard – a two part contraption consisting of a very heavy, bell and horn laden washboard with a hard hat that has a cymbal worn on the head. Utilizing very cool Pete Townsend arm arcs.
