This 1965 cut was guitar player Jimmy Nolen’s first recording with James
Brown. His guitar style worked it’s way into the James Brown sound and became
the root of the funk that Brown would utilize. But this is where it all started,
raising Brown from another soul singer into a funky president.

A 17 year old folkie singer songwriter went down to NYC in the
Greenwich Village heyday and can honestly say that he had none other than
pre-famous guitarist Jimmy James (Hendrix) back him up at Columbia Records.
According to Canadian music-industry veteran Ralph Alfonso, Murdoch told
him that in 1965, while he was trying to get a Columbia Records deal, he
recorded a demo with Al Kooper on keyboards and Jimi Hendrix on guitar. At
that point Hendrix was still using the name Jimmy James. The story gets even
more interesting:
Producer John Hammond was apparently involved in the Columbia deal. Hammond
objected to a lyric containing the word “damn”, believing it would prevent
getting radio airplay. He wanted it removed; Murdoch refused to change it.
According to Murdoch's account, Hammond tore up the contract on the spot.
The demo was never released. Alfonso says he subsequently had someone check
with CBS and was told that the recording was still in the CBS vaults.
With Richie Havens at the production desk, Murdoch had to wait until 1970
to release his first album. From what I heard, he didn’t like the final arrangements
even though Traffic’s Dave Mason played piano on it. It also utilized the
service of Montrealler Bill Garrett of CBC radio fame on lead guitar. Regardless,
Murdoch decided to quit music entirely and wouldn’t return until after a
long absence.

Cohen. Ramolo, who came onto the music scene as one half of Scarlett Jane

The Future sounds futile and should be listened to as a warning but…you know

Sounds Incorporated formed in early 1961. Sounds Incorporated
won the opportunity to back Gene Vincent on his British tour and on recordings
in London. This led to further opportunities to back other visiting American
artists, including Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Brenda Lee and Sam Cooke.
While performing in Hamburg in Germany, they met and befriended the Beatles
and in 1963 signed to Brian Epstein's management company, NEMS. The band's
first two singles on new label Columbia, "The Spartans" and "Spanish Harlem",
made the UK Singles Chart in 1964, were the only successes that Sounds Incorporated
enjoyed in their home country. That same year they became Cilla Black's backing
band, and released their first album called Sounds Incorporated.
The group toured the world as the Beatles' opening act in 1965. The Beatles
invited Cameron, Holmes and West to be the saxophone section on their track
"Good Morning Good Morning", from the album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club
Band.
The Searchers
The Band formed in 1959 by John McNally & Michael Pender taking the name
from John Ford western The Searchers (1956). Cherry Stones was written by
Australian writer John Jerome and published around 1950. It was quickly recorded
by Charlie Kunz, George Gibbs and The Malcolm Mitchell Trio. The Searchers
have now officially retired, having played their final ever gig at The Stables
Theatre in Wavendon, England on March 31, 2019. That was until Glastonbury
called them back for a special feature but for all intents, they’re gone
now. Just the Stones and The Who left now.

Producer Tony Hatch, who later married and produced records by
Petula Clark, wrote ‘Sugar & Spice’, using the pseudonym Fred Nightingale.
He wrote Sugar & Spice based on the successful template of another
hit song, Sweets For My Sweet which the Searchers recorded and went
to number 1 on the British charts. Apparently, Hatch didn’t want the band
to know that he actually wrote those songs, for royalty reasons, and used
the Fred Nightingale name credit. The first line of the chorus, "Sugar and
spice and all things nice", references the nursery rhyme What Are Little
Boys Made Of?, while the following line is the title of the well-known Pete
Seeger/ Lee Hays song, "Kisses Sweeter than Wine".

Written in 1962 by Ian Tyson, Ian and Sylvia first recorded the
song in 1963. Two years later and it’s being recorded on the other side of
the ocean by The Seekers in 1964 and Chad & Jeremy in ’65, same year
as The Searchers. A Canadian winter song about Alberta becomes a folk hit
by rock bands overseas. But it’s noted that the Searcher’s version is the
closest to the original but still sounds like The Searchers.

With scant promotion and little if any radio airplay, their Sire album
did not break into the charts. In fact, it was quickly revamped following
release with a few extra tracks added, one song dropped (Bob Dylan's 'Coming

This is a most remarkable double album of Canadiana, using poets to
recite on a background of sound. The four sides of music are unique individual
experiences. As the liner notes explain: The album started as a casual session…and
after two hours of playing together we all regretted not recording the work.
So we booked a proper studio…and created over 20 hours of improvised music.
We used the Great Lakes as inspiration rather than looking at photos or a
map. And yes, that’s Alex Lifeson on guitar.
