b. June 13, 1931 Clearfield, Penn / d. June 3, 2018 — Masontown, Penn (86)

Cowboy Howard Vokes, Pennsylvania's King of Country Music, was born, June 13,1931 in Clearfield, Pennsylvania. At 15 years of age Howard started singing at a lot of parties and working with different bands in places he wouldn't think about working in these times. Some of the spots were plenty tough and living and working around mining towns. Howard was barn-storming all over the place, singing and playing for anyone that would listen as many hillbilly singers were doing to make a go of it. He was a great favorite at most local parties and other events. He was on the verge of forming a band when tragedy struck. A hunting accident put Howard in the hospital for 6 weeks. He was shot in the right ankle by a high-powered rifle. After he recovered, Cowboy Howard Vokes dug into his song-writings and formed his now famous "Country Boys" band.

Usually spelled Kishka, who'd steal a fuckin' kishka when the butcher turns his back? That's a little cheeky!  It's basically stuffed cow's intestine with a filling made from a combination of meat and meal and roasted with brisket. Originally recorded by Yankovic in 1963, it became a hit song.  According to an obituary for Walt Solek who wrote and recorded the song, "Keeshka always gets the crowd going at a Polkaholics show". Solek was a radio show host who introduced English-language lyrics into polka music in the United States. Solek was known as the "Clown Prince of Polka" and died on 1 April 2005 at the age of 94. Dick Nolan was the first real country and western star from Newfoundland. He claimed that this was the first and only time that he'd been featured on a radio program for a whole hour and loved being here. Known mostly for his song "Aunt Martha's Sheep" which made everybody but Dick, a lot of money. He started recording back in the early 1960s after moving to Toronto to start up his career. Having Dick Nolan on the program was a blast and one blast usually leads to another.

It’s Stompin’ Tom time:

Doirothy and Homer Hogan formed the Maple Sugar Revue, sending star studded troops of traditional musicians across North America performing folk songs of this country. One of those troops was Sutherland, Gordon and Bird who went out on their own, releasing an LP they called Tamarack. Trouble was, everyone started thinking that the band’s name was Tamarack so they became it. This song is from that first LP. It would be the last one that Randy Sutherland played on as he was replaced – eventually – by Alex Sinclair.

Recorded Live on CIUT – Sept 5, 1988 *
Mariposa Radio Folkwaves

I believe that Ron was only 24 when he took the giant leap of leaving his hometown of St. Catherines to hit Toronto as an up and coming singer/songwriter. Joel Wortsman, who did the folk show at CKLN 88.1 FM told me about Ron so I checked him out at the old Sneaky Dee’s (on Bloor then) open stage. After hearing him do a couple of songs I booked him onto my brand new radio program at CIUT called Mariposa Radio Folkwaves (which then morphed into The Great North Wind). He was the first guest I had on the program who performed live, over the air and this is one of the songs he chose to sing.

Eager to distance themselves further from "Clear the Track, Here Comes the Shack", the Secrets adopted the moniker the Quiet Jungle in early 1967. At
the tail-end of the band's association with Arc Records, the Quiet Jungle anonymously recorded a cover album devoted to the Monkees' songs called A
Little Bit Me, I’m a Believer, She Hangs Out plus 9 other ‘Tail-Hanger’ Favorite. The group released "Ship of Dreams" in February 1967 on
Yorkville Records, making the group believe they had finally "turned the corner", and could be considered serious musicians. "Ship of Dreams"
reached number 31 on the CHUM Chart. the band could not escape its image as the Secrets, saying "Our bookings increased and we were playing right
across Canada. Everyone booking us however, wanted the 'Secrets' to play 'Clear the Track Here Comes Shack' and not the group that just released
'Ship of Dreams. Thereafter, the group slowly began to disband during 1968.

The ISB was formed by Gram Parsons while attending Harvard University to study theology around 1965. After performing country-rock for a couple of years, the band were about to break up when Parsons and guitarist John Nuese got a proposal from Lee Hazelwood’s new independent label LHI Records signed them to an exclusive contract. That meant putting some kind of a band together to record. So this wasn’t really the ISB but it’s really, really good. After this album, the band officially broke up and Parsons wound up applying his chemistry as a member of The Byrds in California.

Luxury Liner was a hit for Emmylou Harris who recorded it and named an album after it in 1976, as a tribute to Gram Parsons. The Flying Burrito Brothers used to cover it too when he was at the helm of the band.
