Produced by Russ Walker, 1981
Recorded by Russ Walker and Brock Fricker, Rene Brossard and Gerry Fielding

The brainchild of Oak Ridges, Ontario musician Russ Walker. The band released one album and an EP on their own Illuminated Records. The full-length LP was also released in Japan, Holland and Germany. And they’re not the Oak Ridges Boys, that’s for sure! Drummer Gerry Fielding had previously been in FAT MOUTH, the house band at the original 'Electric Circus' in Toronto, and opened for acts like Alice Cooper, Rod Stewart, and Lighthouse.

Mr. Joe has recorded some fine albums since leaving Mainline in the early 70s. But this one was one of the best! Utilizing the incredible violin playing of Ben Mink and Production wizard Colin Linden, who also supplies bass and guitart, the real stars on this album (other than Joe) are the Shuffle Demons. That's what sets this one apart.

b. June 5, 1955 Montreal, Quebec

Marsh has played with Bruce Cockburn, Rush, FM, kd lang, Loreena McKennitt, Chalk Circle and many others. It isn't surprising then that he would have Cockburn do a recitation on this piece, backed by musicians from Cockburn's '80s band: Fergus Marsh on Chapman Stick (Bass), Rob Pilch on guitar and Jon Goldsmith on keys. Apart from that are some of the Shuffle Demon horns: Perry White and Mike Murley.

Claude Russell Bridges
b. April 2, 1942 Lawton, Ok / d. Nov 13, 2016 (74) Mount Juliet, TN

Side one of this album features the typical keyboard styling’s of Leon Russell while side two goes very strange with psychedelia. As a pianist, he played in his early years on albums by The Beach Boys. On his first album, Leon Russell, in 1970, the musicians included Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison. One of his biggest early fans, Elton John, said Russell was a "mentor" and an "inspiration". They recorded their album The Union in 2010, which earned them a Grammy nomination.

Russell produced and played and recorded with, among others  Jan and Dean, Gary Lewis, George Harrison, Delaney Bramlett, Freddy Cannon, Ringo Starr, Doris Day, Elton John, Ray Charles, Eric Clapton, The Byrds, Barbra Streisand, The Ventures, Willie Nelson, Badfinger, the Tijuana Brass, Frank Sinatra, The Band, Bob Dylan, J. In late 65 he left to form The Bossmen with jazz pianist Tony Collacott and Domenic Troiano in a band that would become the foundation of Mandala. After 1966 Thomas moved to New York to play with John Lee Hooker and eventually emerged fronting Blood Sweat and Tears. The Shays were together for about 3 yrs.

This hour is mostly dedicated to the influence that Mick Jagger had on rock vocalists. He was the superstar of the Stones. He didn't just stand before the band and croon; he was animated, snarly and in your face. The mostly Canadian acts I've chosen don't necessarily imitate Jagger, they just have that animated, snarly singer syndrome that Jagger invented way back in 1962. I thought that by going back to the Heart of the Stones, would be a great way to begin this hourl

Vancouver
Terry Jacks (guitar, vocals)
Guy Sobell (lead guitar)
Bill Lockie (bass)
Erik Kalaidzis (vocals)
Tom Meikle (drums)

Produced by Jerry Kennedy 1965

Guy Sobell was a guitarist in a Vancouver band, The Ken Clark Trio, and while in Europe, he had heard music by Swedish group The Spotnicks and the English group The Shadows and decided to form his own band after returning to Canada. At the same time, a 17 year old named Terry Jacks had put together a “surf” band”, The Sand Dwellers. When the Sand Dwellers split up, some of the members re-formed as The Vancouver Playboys which left Terry Jacks without a band. Jacks and Sobell were introduced to two fellow University of British Columbia students, Bill Lockie, a guitar player who was learning to play bass, and Erik Kalaidzis, a singer who played chess with Sobell and The Chessmen were born. They got to record a few songs and Vancouver DJ Red Robinson gave the tape to London Records who released the band's first single - "Meadowlands" - in December 1964. Mercury released the new single, "Love Didn’t Die", in December 1965 and they band closed out the year opening a show for Gary Lewis and The Playboys in Vancouver. Chessmen split up in 1966 but Terry Jacks went on to enjoy several international hits in the 1970s, including the classic Seasons In The Sun with the Poppy Family.

William "The Captain" Hay (vocal)
Bob Rowden (lead guitar)

Ken Wain (organ)
Gary Connor (bass)
Joe Conroy (guitar)

Produced by Douglas Hawthorne, 1966

They were initially called The Wee Beasties in 1965 but later changed the name to The Painted Ship (not to be confused with The Wee-Beasties punk rock band from Denton, Texas formed in 2000). This raises the point: who came first as according to all the data I’ve been able to collect, Painted Ship recorded first followed by the Beasties. Obviously there’s a mistake out there, somewhere, anywhere.

The single was eventually released in 1967. One interesting twist: Rothchild was jailed for marijuana possession just as the single was being prepared for release, delaying its release for over a year. Were wooed by impressarios Bill Graham & Albert Grossman after opening in New York for The Grateful Dead and in Toronto for Jefferson Airplane & The Dead in Nathan Phillips Square before 50,000 but they broke up.

In Toronto it was the Ugly Ducklings; in Montreal it was The Haunted. Both bands were in the Mick Jagger mode, expanding into psychedelic territory. Over the years, The Haunted went through at least 17 musicians, releasing 7 singles and two albums.

Guitarist Jurgen Peter: "In Canada, in the early '60s, there was no such thing as a commercial music industry. The DJ's played only American records and it was common knowledge that they lived off "payola" from the record companies. When we, The Haunted, started to play as a band in the Montreal area, there was no way to get a recording contract, no one to play your records, no booking agency to book us, no large shows and paying gigs to play at, no music magazine or anything like it to promote a local band.

"I had to scout out large halls and skating arenas and rent them from the local communities for a Friday night dance. I soon found out that if you hired the local DJ to be the master of ceremonies at your show, and gave him a percentage of the gate, he would plug that show all week long without having to buy airtime at a ridiculous price, and if you did have a record, he would actually play it on the air.

"I also realized that I needed a 'vehicle' that would promote The Haunted so I got together with one of our Montreal DJs, Dave Boxer from CFCF and formed a bi-weekly music paper ('Music Trend') and a booking agency (Groups And Sound Service aka GASS)."

The Ducks were really the first local band we thought of as Stars. They got together in 1965 as a Rolling Stones attitude band with one of them in a Brian Jones haircut and the lead vocals approximating Mick Jagger. After releasing their first hit, “Nothin’”, they were one of many bands who got to open for the Stones at Maple Leaf Gardens before 15,000 fans.

She Ain’t No Use To Me was a good follow-up but it wasn’t until they released Gaslight in 1967 that they hit the number one spot in Canada. In 1968 Yorkville Records released the band's debut album, 'Somewhere Outside', and Mick Jagger proclaimed The Ugly Ducklings as "my favourite Canadian band". The trouble was, they had already disbanded.

One of the albums I bought strictly because of the cover. I had no idea what these guys would sound like so I invested $3.50 to find out. These guys formed as The Druids in NYC in 1965. They played the club scene and had a good following. In 1967 they decided to make the pilgrimage to California where they got more into phsychadelic sounds. There, they signed to Uni Records (Universal) and recorded their only album, Creation, and changing their name to The Druids of Stonehenge. The following year they were toast.

So I won my own silent contest! Dave Bingham - to me - had the best of Mick Jagger's Jagger-Rhythms. So in honour of my rediculous victory, here's the band's second hit (by Canadian standards) single. I took it from the album.

Benjamin Mink
b. Toronto January 22, 1951

Mink got his start performing with the rock group Mary-Lou Horner, which became the house band at Toronto’s  "The Rockpile" nightclub. They got to open for Led Zeppelin and Muddy Waters, along with being a backup band for Chuck Berry.

Mink was a member of Stringband, played in Murray McLauchlan's Silver Tractors and replaced Nash The Slash in FM. He is best known as a long-time collaborator with Canadian singer k.d. lang, whom he met at Expo '85 while doing a gig with CANO.

Mink was invited to play electric violin on the Rush song "Losing It" from the band's 1982 album Signals and contributed strings to "Faithless" from the 2007 album Snakes & Arrows. He also co-wrote, produced and played guitar on Geddy Lee’s solo album ‘My Favourite Headache’ (2000).  He’s appeared on albums by Barenaked Ladies, Anne Murray, Dan Hill, Mendelson Joe, Prairie Oyster, Raffi, Jane Siberry, Ian and Sylvia Tyson, Valdy, Bruce Cockburn, Murray McLauchlan, Willie P. Bennett, Susan Aglukark, Alison Krauss, Feist, Daniel Lanois, Sarah McLachlan, Roy Orbison, Elton John and Heart.

Ben Mink is one of few people to ever share a songwriting credit with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. In 1997 Mink and k.d. lang were credited as songwriters on the Stones single "Anybody Seen My Baby?".
